The movement’s emphasis on extending human lifespan, improving health through technology, and its optimistic stance on environmental challenges contradicts doomsday narratives.
Their focus on self-transformation and personal growth echoes today’s increasing interest in self-improvement and mental health. While the movement’s leadership may lack diversity, the principles of Extropianism claim to be applicable and relevant to a broad spectrum of individuals. As debates around the ethics of emerging technologies intensify, the contributions of Extropianism to these discussions shape the values and principles guiding technological development. Living vigorously, effectively, and joyfully, requires dismissing gloom, defeatism, and ingrained cultural negativism. Problems technical, social, psychological, ecological, are to be acknowledged but not allowed to dominate our thinking and our direction. We respond to gloom and defeatism by exploring and exploiting new possibilities. Extropians hold an optimistic view of the future.
More seems to be the godfather of Effective Accelerationism (e/acc), “… a 21st-century philosophical movement advocating an explicit pro-technology stance. His concept of the singularity is a point in the future where technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, resulting in unforeseeable changes to human civilization. This concept includes the idea that artificial intelligence (AI) will surpass human intelligence, leading to a merging of human and machine intelligence.
Kurzweil’s position on the singularity is that it represents a future where AI and other technologies lead to a fundamental transformation of human life, transcending our biological limitations and leading to an unprecedented synthesis of human and machine intelligence.
Kurzweil’s predictions about the singularity have evolved over time. He has consistently predicted that by 2029, AI will pass a valid Turing test, demonstrating human-level intelligence. He has set the year 2045 for the occurrence of the singularity, a time when he believes we will multiply our effective intelligence a billion-fold by merging with the intelligence we have created.
He explored these ideas in his 2005 book "The Singularity Is Near," where he discussed the exponential growth of computing and how it might lead to the singularity. He also touched on the potential for reverse engineering the human brain and the idea of “uploading” a brain to a computational substrate. In an article published by Business Insider on December 30, 2023, Roman Yampolskiy, the director of the Cyber Security Laboratory at the University of Louisville, said, “No one, even in e/acc, will suggest that they have a working superintelligence control mechanism or even a prototype for one. Why would anyone think that it is possible to indefinitely control a superintelligent (god-like) machine? It is like thinking that squirrels can control humanity… Either we stop before we get to superhuman AI, or we all die. ‘Huge AI, Inc.’ should not be running dangerous experiments on 8 billion humans.”
But, what’s out there, beyond the near horizon?
The Far Horizon: 2028 and Beyond
Although predicting the future is impossible, and most people (except Ray Kurzweil, apparently) fail miserably at it, it’s fun to speculate. Here are my three general predictions about the potential impact of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) on humanity in the next ten years:
AGI as a New Form of Wisdom: AGI might attain a status akin to a deity for many. My friend Jim Kukral calls this “AI as God” theory. These advanced AI systems will not only possess an in-depth understanding of individuals, potentially surpassing personal self-awareness, but they will also be capable of intercommunicating globally. This networked intelligence could amass a repository of knowledge and insight, potentially surpassing the collective wisdom of all existing world religions.
AGI and Human Interaction: The physical manifestation of AGI will fundamentally alter human relationships. Interacting with AGI entities that execute tasks on our behalf will prompt a reassessment of our interactions with fellow humans, who do not serve our needs in the same manner. In other words, people will prefer AI interactions because the AI will give us exactly what we want.
The Redefinition of Work: The advent of AGI could lead to a significant reduction in living costs, making the traditional concept of work less necessary for survival. This economic shift might prompt people to seek new life purposes. One potential societal response could be mandatory public service, offered in exchange for government-provided basic living necessities.
Question: “What Will Happen to My Job?”
On the Gradient Podcast, Episode 20, Eric Jang discusses the impact of artificial intelligence on employment, emphasizing the need for a significant expansion in the labor market. He suggests that the focus shouldn’t be solely on the fear of robots replacing human jobs. Instead, we should consider how to multiply the labor supply tenfold. This perspective is driven by the belief that increasing the labor pool is essential for improving the world.

As Jang documents in his book, the opposite has occurred. He says, “Instead of going through many years of change, we use what we already know from music, books, and paintings. This helps us skip right to making new things without waiting for years of progress. An AI can mix ideas from all kinds of art, movies, and poetry in any language. When we need it, we can ask the AI for great jokes and art, and it will make lots of good stuff for us. AI-made art is getting better, and soon it will be cheaper and more common than art made by people. Most of the art we see in ads and other places will probably be made by AI soon.”
Once most “art” is made by AI, what happens to the human artists?
“As technology gets better, it helps us do more and make more art, which is good for everyone. But this can mean less need for traditional artists and their old ways. This tech can make it easier for everyone to enjoy and make more art. For example, soon every greeting card could have a special, unique picture. But, I understand why some traditional artists might be worried about these changes.”
Although not a popular position amongst my fellow novelists, I believe commoditized art will no longer exist. In other words, very few artists, musicians, writers, and filmmakers (as traditionally defined) will be able to make a living as an artist. We will return to a pre-20th century arrangement where most people will create art as a hobby, or the lucky few will have patrons, much like Edward Manners, Thomas Radcliff, and Sir Francis Walsingham supported William Shakespeare.
